- Dosage & Administration:
- Administration: Can be taken on an empty or full stomach, alone or with food. If blood pressure is not controlled with losartan alone, a low-dose diuretic can be added. Do not combine losartan with potassium-sparing diuretics due to the risk of hyperkalemia.
- Dosage: Dosage depends on the individual patient and should be adjusted based on blood pressure response.
- Adults with hypertension: Treatment usually starts with 50 mg losartan once daily. The maximum antihypertensive effect is achieved after 3-6 weeks of starting treatment. The dose can be increased up to 100 mg once daily.
- Children under 6 years: Not recommended as it has not been sufficiently studied.
- Children 6-18 years: The initial dose for patients weighing 20 to 50 kg is 0.7 mg/kg (up to 25 mg Losartan/day/dose). Physicians may increase the dose if blood pressure is not controlled.
- Adults with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes: Treatment usually starts with 50 mg losartan once daily. The dose can be increased up to 100 mg once daily depending on the patient’s response. Losartan can be used with other antihypertensive drugs (diuretics, calcium channel blockers, alpha or beta blockers) and blood glucose-lowering medications (insulin, sulfonylureas, glitazones, and glucosidase inhibitors).
- Adults with heart failure: Treatment usually starts with 12.5 mg once daily. The dose should be increased weekly (i.e., 12.5 mg/day for the first week, 25 mg/day for the second week, 50 mg/day for the third week, 100 mg/day for the fourth week, 150 mg/day for the fifth week) up to the maintenance dose determined by the physician. A maximum dose of 150 mg losartan once daily can be used. In the treatment of heart failure, losartan is often combined with diuretics and/or digitalis and/or beta-blockers.
- Special Populations: The physician will prescribe a lower dose, especially at the start of treatment, for patients taking high-dose diuretics, those with hepatic impairment, or the elderly (over 75 years). Use is not recommended for patients with severe hepatic impairment.

- Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation.
