- Dosage & Administration:
- Administration: Oral use. The medicine should be taken on an empty stomach.
- Dosage:
- Treatment of beta-hemolytic Streptococcus infections: At least 10 days of treatment with cefaclor is required.
- Usual dose for adults: 250 mg, every 8 hours. For more severe infections or those caused by less susceptible bacteria, the dose can be doubled. A dose of 4g per day has been used safely in normal subjects for 28 days, but the total daily dose should not exceed 4g.
- Dose for pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis, recurrent tonsillitis, sinusitis: 250 mg, every 8 hours. For more severe infections, the dose can be doubled.
- Treatment of otitis media: 250 mg, every 8 hours. For more severe infections, the dose can be doubled.
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis and cystitis): 250 mg, every 8 hours. For more severe infections or those caused by less susceptible bacteria, the dose can be doubled.
- Skin and soft tissue infections: 250 mg, every 8 hours. For more severe infections, the dose can be doubled.
- Dosage for renal impairment: Cefaclor can be used in patients with renal impairment. In severe renal impairment, the dose should be adjusted for adults as follows: If creatinine clearance is 10-50 ml/min, use 50% of the usual dose; if creatinine clearance is less than 10 ml/min, use 25% of the usual dose.
- Hemodialysis patients: When on hemodialysis, the half-life of cefaclor in the serum is reduced by 25-30%. Therefore, for patients on regular hemodialysis, an initial dose of 250 mg – 1 g should be taken before hemodialysis, and a maintenance dose of 250-500 mg should be taken every 6-8 hours between dialysis sessions.
- Elderly: Use the same dose as adults.
- Children: The usual daily dosage recommendation for children is 20 mg/kg/day divided into multiple doses every 8 hours. For otitis media and pharyngitis, the total daily dose can be divided into doses every 12 hours. The safety and efficacy for children under 1 month have not been established.
